Oh Canada

Wow. This has been an amazing day for Canada. I've never been more proud to say I'm a Canadian than today. Just amazing. I've never been into the Olympics in past years, especially when all the shows I love stop airing while they're playing. This year, due to Kates love for figure skating and ice dance and lack of having her own TV, I ended up falling in love with the Olympics. I wasn't originally going to do a post on the games because everyone else seemed to take care of it, but I feel like I should write in my own words the impact it had on me this year so that I can look back and remember this moment in Canadian history. Now, I didn't watch all of the different events, actually very little compared to most people, but the ones I did watch I really go into them.

First, Scott and Tessa. Not only was it the most captivating ice dance I have ever seen, but I have a new love. (Scott Moir, not ice dance) All three of their programs were absolutely breath taking, and they definitely earned their gold medals. I also loved the figure skating with Jessica and Bryce. I forget what they placed, but they are a beautiful couple as well.

Second, and not mentioned near enough, the Womens Hockey Team!! Our Canadian Ladies KILLED it out there! I hadn't watched any full games, except gold, because of homework (shocking, I know), but they owned it. Everyone says that there was no doubt that they would get gold, as if its not that big of deal, but I think that just because they're kick ass and it was expected doesn't take away from how awesome it is!

I'm a little embarassed to say this, but I watched the curling gold medal game. Not that I have anything against curling, but I've always found it a tad slow. My dad and stepmom are curlers though, (pro kentville curlers, I might add haha) and I ended up watching it with them in Moncton last night. Oddly, I really got into it. I yelled "hard! hard!" at the screen, despite the fact that I didn't yell it at the right time or know what it means. Of course, Canada dominated in curling throughout, and the men grabbed gold in the end. Highlights of curling, team Norways pants. Loved it. The fact that the really cute guy on team Canada, I think his name was John, didn't change is socks throughout the entire olympics until they won. Funny, but I feel like he probably has a bad case of athletes foot! (I'd still date him though) Lastly, the fact that towards the end, before we actually won, the audience started singing Oh Canada! A little early, but gave me the chills nonetheless.

Finally, MENS HOCKEYYY! Watched the game from start to finish, and I don't remember breathing. SO intense. How the US managed to score with 24 seconds left is beyond me! They were definite competition and HUGE props to Miller. There's no doubt he is an amazing goalie, not that I know much about hockey, other than watching my 3 brothers play for the better part of my life. (no sarcasm intended. I know shockingly little about rules in hockey after SO many years in freezing cold rinks. Why did I even go? Duh, cute hockey boys) Back to Canada! Crosby, you did Canada AND Nova Scotia prouddd!! I jumped out of my seat! Such an intense gold medal game! "Now they know whose game they're playing!" Thank you, Coca-Cola, for one of the best commercials.

So that about sums up MY views on the olympics. I'll be sure to tune in in four years when Canada tries to beat the gold medal record that THEY have now set, in Russia! Well done, Canada!

Wait.. What?

I've already failed to understand the actual plans of this break. I'm not even in the Valley yet! Not that I mind staying in Moncton for the night at all, but don't you hate that feeling when you're expecting your day to go one way and it turns out you were clueless as to what the plans actually were? I was completely under the impression that when I left Fredericton I would be home in 6ish hours. Turns out that isn't the case. I'll be in Moncton for the night and home tomorrow.

On the plus side, we're going to Ponderosa tonight! Just when I thought that the East coast had wiped out all of these wondeful restaurants! Seriously though, what could be better than having a mixture of nachos and cheese, pasta, chicken and whatever else on one plate!? Nothing. Nothing is better than that.

That's all.

UPDATE: Ponderosa was awful. Gross gross gross. Aside from my sundae and nachoes.. and tater tots, I was very disappointed. It's no wonder they keep getting rid of Ponderosas.

Death Cough!!

I started this blog to keep track of all the eventful things that happen in my last months of university and the months I spend at home preparing to move to Calgary. Turns out, eventful things don't happen all that often. At least nothing worth sitting down to write a blog about, and definitely nothing interesting enough for people to want to read. I'm running out of things to do at this point, so I'm going to write a blog about nothing anyways!

For the last week and a half.. or more.. I have been basically trapped in my room trying to recover from, what I like to call, Death Cough. It resembles a cold in the sense that you have the typical stuffy nose and sore throat, but after the first week of regular cold symptoms I'm left feeling perfectly fine for the most part until Death Cough attacks. Of course, this generally happens when I'm wanting to go to sleep.. so around 1am to 2am.. and nothing helps.

I've tried Buckleys, which was the worst of all the medicines I've tried. It was so bad that it required two people in order to choke down the recommended two teaspoons. (Thanks Kate) I relate the experience to eating two teaspoons of vicks vapour rub. Not a good time.

After seeing a doctor, I'm told to try DM syrup, which has been the best cough syrup when combined with two nighttime cold and flu pills. These two cough suppressants are enough to knock me out.. for about 10 minutes to an hour. Death Cough wakes me up periodically throughout the night and then goes away when it's time to get up in the morning.

I'm still taking suggestions from anyone who has a miracle cure for Death Cough. I'm trying Neo-citran tonight. I've been drinking lemon tea, taking day and nighttime cold and flu pills, two different kinds of syrup and about 15 packs of Halls.

Death Cough combined with excessive shakiness, (I assume from the multiple medications listed above) have kept me from doing anything eventful, which leaves me with nothing to blog about. Spring Break is next weekend, which means a trip to the Valley. I'm sure blog-worthy events will take place at this time.

Good Ol' Gooog

I'm just hanging out in Schlee's room and she got me in the bloggin mood. Something else she got me hooked on... Google Street View! Its even better than Google Earth! I was able to go to the house that I lived in this summer and oddly enough, the pictures of my uncles street were taken while I was there! The camero in the driveway and the poorly parked mazda on the side of the road was a dead give away. (I can hear my uncles sarcastic tone saying "nice parking job" as he changes the channel from Friends to the news). I was also creepin on my brothers condo, the Smoliks house, Cochrane, Maui, and of course, Kentvulll. Next on my list of places to stalk is going to be where I hope to live for the next 2 years, the University of Calgary.

Clearly this month is all about new technologies for me, which is always fun. Last night I learned how to use Skype. Can't say I'm loving it as much as I adore this Goog Street thingy, but it was nice to chat with my lovely Pamela and be able to see her at the same time. Too bad it wouldn't let us talk for much more than a few minutes before the call dropped....over and over again.

If only Goog could magically get rid of this death-cough that's been lingering for days! Or make my room warm... here's hoping!

Accepted!!

Holy Moly! I can't even believe it. After explaining to a friend how I would have to take the long road to becoming a teacher because my chances of getting into an education degree were slim, I check my University of Calgary account and what do ya know! They accepted me! Conditionally, of course.

After running down the hallway I finally found people to share the news with... and then cried uncontrollably for a few minutes. I've already called my mom twice today for insignificant reasons, and the one time today that I call her with important news, shes not home!

I called my brother instead and this is how he answers, in his low and unenthused voice, "You're lucky. I'm just running to my locker to get my keys. I'm working though. What do you want?" I was hoping that my crying would make him cry with happiness as well. That didn't happen... but he congratulated me all the same.

This is officially the beginning of the exciting journey of finally getting to where I really want to be. (no offence Mom and Dad, who are luckily quite challenged in the technology department)

Thanks to Ms. Cummings, I have joined the world of blogging. Yet another distraction from doing homework. Despite having a major in English, my spelling and grammar will be awful in all future posts... just warning you!
I've decided to start blogging because I think it will be interesting to keep track of all of the things that happen this year while I end my final year at STU and move my life out west.
It's unlikely that these posts will be interesting to anyone other than myself, but my handwriting is too messy and I am far too lazy to keep a journal.
Unlike a lot of the other Valley folk in this hallway I generally don't enjoy to be in the Valley for much more than a day or two. Sometimes a good hour is enough to make me lose my mind, and apparently my dislike for being there is humorous to others, therefore it is blog-worthy. Instead of waiting until the summer when I move home to start blogging, I thought I'd get started now because, honestly, I'm getting tired of facebooking for a good part of each day.
